Kittens are weaned at between six and seven weeks, and cats normally reach sexual maturity at 5–10 months (females) and to 5–7 months (males). The gestation period for cats is about two months, with an average length of 66 days. A female cat may mate with more than one cat when she is in heat, and different kittens in a litter may have different fathers. Several male cats may be attracted to a female cat in heat. However, cats are naturally curious, so some domesticated cats may get into some mischief.

The second year adds nine more human years, so two cat years are approximately 24 human years. Consult our Cat Age Calculator, which calculates your pet’s age in human years. Many hope to see an end to urban feral cat cat colonies through these efforts. In time, if an entire colony is successfully spayed and neutered, no additional kittens are born and the feral colony disappears.
Where Do Cats Live?
- A common compromise is to use the laser pointer to draw the cat to a prepositioned toy so the cat gets a reward at the end of the chase.
- Attacks usually comprise powerful slaps to the face and body with the forepaws as well as bites, but serious damage is rare; usually the loser runs away with little more than a few scratches to the face, and perhaps the ears.
- Since domestic cats today aren’t related to leopard cats, the harmony doesn’t seem to have lasted.
- The normal body temperature of a cat is between 38 and 39°C (101 and 102.2°F).
- Their body language, including position of ears and tail, relaxation of the whole body, and kneading of the paws, are all indicators of mood.
- The retina of the cat’s eye is made extra sensitive to light by a layer of guanine, which causes the eye to shine at night in a strong light.
As a result, cats have a tendency to relax and become quiet and passive when gripped there. The particularly loose skin at the back of the neck is known as the "scruff" and is the area by which a mother cat grips her kittens to carry them. Li (2005) reports that due to a mutation in an early cat ancestor, one of two genes necessary to taste sweetness has been lost by the cat family (Li 2005). To aid with navigation and sensation, cats have dozens of movable vibrissae (whiskers) over their body, especially their face. Conversely, very small cats (less than 1.8 kg / 4.0 lb) have been reported. The tiny hooks on cats' tongues help them groom themselves and clean meat off of bones.
What family does the domestic cat belong to?

Acinonychinae used to only contain the genus Acinonyx but this genus is now within the Felinae subfamily. With their large upper canine saber teeth, they were adapted to prey on large-bodied megaherbivores. In the Early Miocene about 20 to 16.6 million years ago, Pseudaelurus lived in Africa.

It has been found that cat owners' knowledge affects how they care for their cats. About 250 heritable genetic disorders have been identified in cats; many are similar to human inborn errors of metabolism. However, neutering decreases metabolism and increases food intake, both of which can cause obesity in neutered cats. Neutering increases life expectancy; one a 2024 study found neutered cats to live one year longer than entire cats.
